The Faculty is located in the North Western Province (NWP), about 55 kms forwards north-east of Colombo on the Negombo Kurunegala Road.

The FLFN comprises of four departments of study; namely Applied Nutrition, Aquaculture & Fisheries, Livestock & Avian Sciences, and Food Science & Technology. Until 1999, the Department of Food Science & Technology was attached to the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Applied Nutrition to the Faculty of Applied Sciences I of the Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.

In 2001, the Faculty introduced its first Bachelor Degree in Food Science and Nutrition. This degree programme in combined disciplines of Food Science and Nutrition (FSN) is the first of its kind in the Sri Lankan university system. Until 2009, FSN programme offered subject specializations in Aquaculture & Fisheries, Applied Nutrition, Livestock & Avian Science, and Food Science & Technology. In 2009, as a result of a major curriculum revision, the Faculty introduced the second Bachelor Degree programme titled “Food Production & Technology Management”.

The Faculty was initially housed in an old building, which was earlier used by the Paddy Marketing Department as a paddy stores. Two thirds of the proposed new faculty building has now been completed. Except the Department of Applied Nutrition, the other Departments and the Faculty administration now operates from the new building. Recently, the Faculty has introduced an outreach mechanism to formalize extension programmes. The Faculty has also established an examination unit and a printing unit, which facilitates the examination process and the teaching & learning process of the faculty. A considerable development of the Faculty happened during the implementation of the QEF grant under the IRQUE Project.
