Nanotechnology is the understanding and controlling of matter at dimensions between approximately 1 and 100 nanometres, where unique phenomena enable novel applications. It involves imaging, measuring, modelling, and manipulating materials at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales, where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale. The Department of Nano Science Technology is an interdisciplinary department that encompasses chemistry, material science, biotechnology, nano medicine, etc. and its applications are expanding rapidly to develop products in the fields of electronics (solar cells, fuel cells, batteries, super capacitors and sensors), environment & food (water filters, nano fertilizers, rubber applications, nano textile applications, food coatings and wastage management applications), and healthcare & medicine (nano drugs, drug delivery methods, cosmetics) with a huge potential of increasing demand for nanotechnology workers worldwide.

The Department of Nano Science Technology is established under the Faculty of Technology. The four-year undergraduate degree programme is designed to meet the needs that integrate multidisciplinary fields in order to develop a sound theoretical knowledge and necessary skills to confront the interdisciplinary challenges faced. The primary focus of the academic programme is around nanotechnology and materials science to produce value addition to market driven products in a vast area. Polymer Science, ceramic science, carbon nanotechnologies, and fermentation are a few industrial areas that will be intensively studied under the programme. Students will also be offered significant components from the subject area of Information Technology.

The students from the Advanced Level Technology Stream with the Engineering Technology and the Science for Technology subjects are eligible to apply for this programme through the University Grants Commission. The annual intake of the university for the Nano science degree programme is 75 students.

Further, this degree programme contains a compulsory research project, which will expose the students to analyse and find innovate solutions for real-world problems related to nano flavoured material science. As a part of this degree programme, all the students are entitled for the industrial training programme to gain industrial exposure by working for leading organizations in the field of material and nano science technology.

They possess the aptitude, attitude, and skills necessary for the continuous pursuit of knowledge throughout life and are equipped to be genuine problem solvers with the ability to come up with innovative solutions to produce the most appealing Nano-flavoured products of all disciplines in the market in support of the sustainable economic growth of the country leading to a better Sri Lanka.
