Terms of Reference

1. Purpose

The Research Development, Higher Degrees & Publication Committee is responsible for recommending to the Faculty Board matters relating to the academic publications and higher degree programs of the Faculty.

2. Committee Composition and Meetings

A. Membership
(i) Dean of the Faculty
(ii) Heads of Departments
(iii) Professors
(iv) One Senior member from each department

The Committee shall appoint a Chairperson from among its members.

In addition to above members, experts can be invited to the Committee in the event and expertise is needed as decided by the Committee.

B. Quorum
Quorum shall be 50% of the membership.

C. Meetings
The Committee will meet two times a semester or more frequently as circumstances dictate. Meetings may be called by the chair on an as needed basis to deal with issues that need immediate attention.

D. Terms of Office
Terms of office for members of this committee will be three years.

3. Responsibilities and Duties

The Research Development, Higher Degrees & Publication Committee shall:

(i) Review annually the Faculty’s Graduate Studies plans and prepare a report for Faculty Board on achievements of objectives and targets during the year;

(ii) Develop and maintain the Research Development, Higher Degrees & Publication Committee web pages;

(iii) Provide advice to the Dean, Faculty Board and Board of Studies of the faculty on matters relating to higher degrees;

(iv) Report, via the Faculty Board, to the University’s Research & Higher Degrees Committee on pertinent matters;

(v) Ensure the accuracy of information included in the University’s Postgraduate Handbook and other relevant publications with respect to Faculty higher degrees;

(vi) Make recommendations of the development priorities, structure and content of higher degree programs within the Faculty and monitor their operation and effectiveness and recommend amendments or additions to the Regulations to the Board of Studies;

(vii) Develop policy relating to the selection of students for higher degrees of the faculty;

(viii) Provide recommendations to the faculty with respect to budget allocations and financial matters in support of the higher degree programs;

(ix) Liaison with University Research & Higher Degrees Committee admissions and enrolment of research students of the Faculty;

(x) Develop faculty-specific policies and mechanisms consistent with University policy, relating to the selection and performance of supervisors (both internal and external) of research degrees of the Faculty;

(xi) Develop policy relating to the monitoring of Faculty research higher degree students & develop policy relating to remediation of problem identified during the monitoring of progress;

(xii) Recommend to the Faculty on procedures to assist staff and research higher degree students to comply with University and statutory ethics requirements.
