Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL) is one of the latest and modern learning and research institutions in Sri Lanka. The degree programmes offered at Wayamba University are different from others as it offers students much more than a mere educational qualification. Wayamba University is located at two premises- Kuliyapitya and Makandura with easy access from Colombo, Kurunegala, and Kandy. The University has established links with national and regional industries, business establishments, research institutes and government and non-government organizations. The University has initiated several research activities with industry collaborations.

The Regional Dialogue on Science and Technology Policy in the Context of Biotechnology towards Sustainable Development organized by Regional Centre for Biotechnology, India jointly with UNESCO was held on 29th and 30th December 2015. Dr.K.Vivehananthan, Head of the Department of Biotechnology has delivered the Country Strategy Paper on “Sustainable Development and Biotechnology in Sri Lanka”.

Staff & Educational Development Association (SEDA) – a legendary professional association based in the United Kingdom promoting innovation and good practice in higher education which is reputed as the shaper of thought and initiator of action in staff and educational development in the international domain – has offered a ‘Senior Fellowship’, renowned as SFSEDA (UK), to Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe-Mudalige of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. It is the first time in the history of SEDA (UK) a Senior Fellowship has been conferred to a staff and educational developer in Sri Lanka, which is the highest qualification that it offers that takes into account of continuous professional development (CPD) and reflective practice of an academic developer in the areas of teaching, learning, assessment, curriculum and institutional development, leadership and management, research, training and development etc. SEDA's professional development framework provides recognition for higher education institutions worldwide, accreditation for their professional development programs and recognition for the individuals who achieve and share a common set of values and core development outcomes and its own set of specialist outcomes.

Entrepreneurship Development Program for University Graduate

The Career Guidance Unit has decided to implement the “Upadhidari Viyawasayake Udanaya” program in collaboration with National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA) in 2016 with a wider publicity across all four faculties in the university. Hence, in order to make effective undertaking of the program we have decided to conduct two programs separately for Kuliyapitiya and Makandura premises.

The awareness program on “Upadhidari Viyawasayake Udanaya” for 3rd and 4th year students and just passed out graduates of all four faculties will be held on 03rd June 2016 at main Auditorium,Kuliyapitiya. 

FAPM-Tissue Culture Laboratory

Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management- State of the Art Tissue Culture Laboratory from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management developed a fully equipped tissue culture laboratory through the research project titled ‘Enhancement of cassava through inbreeding’ funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA. The funds were channeled through the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Colombia, a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium. Wayamba University of Sri Lanka is one of the collaborators of this project together with four other institutes namely International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria, National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), Uganda and Icesi University, Colombia. Dr. P.I.P. Perera, Senior Lecturer, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening acts as the coordinator of the project at the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. While achieving the goal of this project, it provides a great opportunity for capacity building by employing the undergraduate and postgraduate students for the research activities on plant tissue culture aspects.


FAPM adds a new Department

FAPM adds a new Department and offers a new Degree programme

A new department has been established in the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management (FAPM) under the name of Department of Biosystems Engineering. The new department in collaboration with the other four existing departments of FAPM will offer a new degree programme in Bachelor of Biosystems Technology (BBST) starting from the intake of 2015/2016 batch of students. The four year programme is oriented for Technology stream A/L students and aims at supporting the development of human resources needed for increasing numbers of middle and upper level technical and technology management positions in the country preventing unemployment and underemployment among the graduates to contribute to the national development. Dr. D.S.P. Kuruppuarachchi, Senior Lecturer/ FAPM has been appointed as the Head/ Department of Biosystems Engineering.

Diploma in English - Results ( Intake IX )

The final results of the examination held in January 2016 for Diploma in English (Intake IX) conducted by the English Language Teaching Unit of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Kuliyapitiya have been released*.
