Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL) is one of the latest and modern learning and research institutions in Sri Lanka. The degree programmes offered at Wayamba University are different from others as it offers students much more than a mere educational qualification. Curricular of the University aim at providing students a total holistic approach to one of a kind educational experience that enables them to achieve career goals along with creativity and innovativeness. Wayamba University is located at two premises- Kuliyapitya and Makandura with easy access from Colombo, Kurunegala, and Kandy. The two locations are situated in an ideal environment with food and agribusiness, and industrial and commercial activities. The University has established links with national and regional industries, business establishments, research institutes and government and non-government organizations. The University has initiated several research activities with industry collaborations.

Best Batsman of the Tournament

Mr. M.A. Asanka Karunarathna, the captain of the Wayamba University Staff Cricket Team received the Best Batsman of the Tournament for two consecutive years (2014 & 2015) at the 109th Annual Awards Night of the Sri Lanka State Services Cricket Association held on the 26th of May 2016 at the Solis Hotel, Kotte. Wayamba University Staff Sports Club became runner-up in this year’s (2016) state services cricket tournament.

"FAS offers Bachelor of  Engineering Technology"

The Faculty of Applied Sciences has planned to offer the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering Technology. The students from the Advanced Level Technology Stream with the Engineering Technology and the Science for Technology subjects are eligible to apply for the programme through University Grant Commission.The university has planned for an annual intake of 75 students starting from the year 2016. Wayamba University aims to assure the quality of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology program to produce globally recognized engineering technologists.

Dr.K.Vivehananthan, Head of the Department of Biotechnology has delivered the Country Strategy Paper on “Sustainable Development and Biotechnology in Sri Lanka”.

Staff & Educational Development Association (SEDA) – a legendary professional association based in the United Kingdom promoting innovation and good practice in higher education which is reputed as the shaper of thought and initiator of action in staff and educational development in the international domain – has offered a ‘Senior Fellowship’, renowned as SFSEDA (UK), to Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe-Mudalige of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. It is the first time in the history of SEDA (UK) a Senior Fellowship has been conferred to a staff and educational developer in Sri Lanka, which is the highest qualification that it offers that takes into account of continuous professional development (CPD) and reflective practice of an academic developer in the areas of teaching, learning, assessment, curriculum and institutional development, leadership and management, research, training and development etc. SEDA's professional development framework provides recognition for higher education institutions worldwide, accreditation for their professional development programs and recognition for the individuals who achieve and share a common set of values and core development outcomes and its own set of specialist outcomes.

FAPM-Tissue Culture Laboratory

Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management- State of the Art Tissue Culture Laboratory from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management developed a fully equipped tissue culture laboratory through the research project titled ‘Enhancement of cassava through inbreeding’ funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA. The funds were channeled through the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Colombia, a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium. Wayamba University of Sri Lanka is one of the collaborators of this project together with four other institutes namely International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria, National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI), Uganda and Icesi University, Colombia. Dr. P.I.P. Perera, Senior Lecturer, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening acts as the coordinator of the project at the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. While achieving the goal of this project, it provides a great opportunity for capacity building by employing the undergraduate and postgraduate students for the research activities on plant tissue culture aspects.

FAPM adds a new Department

 

FAPM adds a new Department and offers a new Degree programme

A new department has been established in the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management (FAPM) under the name of Department of Biosystems Engineering. The new department in collaboration with the other four existing departments of FAPM will offer a new degree programme in Bachelor of Biosystems Technology (BBST) starting from the intake of 2015/2016 batch of students. The four year programme is oriented for Technology stream A/L students and aims at supporting the development of human resources needed for increasing numbers of middle and upper level technical and technology management positions in the country preventing unemployment and underemployment among the graduates to contribute to the national development. Dr. D.S.P. Kuruppuarachchi, Senior Lecturer/ FAPM has been appointed as the Head/ Department of Biosystems Engineering.
