The Department of Anatomy guides you, the student, to learn about the structure and function of the human body. This knowledge is considered to form the foundation of medicine. The subject of Anatomy has developed over the years, and we are still learning about the body in even greater detail.

1. Drawing from Leonardo  da Vinci (1452-1519)

The need to have a deep understanding of the body and a mental view of the structure of your body in a 3D spatial orientation is now more important than ever. This is partly because of the impressive development of imaging modalities which can give us various complex views of the body.

2. A transverse section from an image of the chest of a CT Scan

Another reason is the way we do surgery now, with methods like endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques needing very good understanding of detailed, spatially oriented and contextual anatomical knowledge.

Your lecturers in the department are happy to help you along in your learning experience towards becoming a professional in the most rewarding of careers.
